Case study — Campaign & organizing

UTM United — a campus-wide campaign

A student-government run built like a policy campaign: a short platform, a disciplined ground game, and roughly 1,200 votes earned in under a month.

The problem

  • Campus elections are decided by turnout among students who believe nothing will change — apathy, not opposition, is the opponent.
  • Candidates typically arrive with long, undifferentiated platforms nobody can repeat back.
  • A three-week window, a volunteer team, and a hard spending cap.

The approach

  1. Cut the platform to what can be repeated

Reduced a dozen ambitions to a handful of concrete commitments on affordability, transit and external advocacy — each one testable and stated in a single sentence.

  2. Field over feed

Class talks, residence canvassing and club-by-club endorsements first; social content built to document the ground game rather than substitute for it.

  3. Volunteer discipline

Daily standups, assigned turf, and a shared tracker so effort landed where votes actually were instead of where the crowd felt friendliest.

Deliverables

  • Platform document and one-page voter-facing summary
  • Campaign identity, print collateral and social kit
  • Canvass plan, volunteer rota and daily tracking sheet
  • Press engagement, including a published candidate profile in The Varsity

A campaign that proved a disciplined, message-first ground operation moves students who normally ignore campus politics — the same method now applied to launches and advocacy work.
