Networking Night 2024

Turning a students' association's quietest asset — its alumni — into a room of 100+ guests, sponsors and hiring managers in a single evening.

The problem

  • The association had cultural reach but no professional pipeline: members graduated into the same networks they arrived with.
  • Previous events were announced late, attracted a thin crowd, and produced no follow-through after the night ended.
  • There was no sponsor relationship, no speaker roster and no budget beyond a modest student levy.

The approach

  1. Treat attendance as a campaign, not an invitation

Segmented the member list, ran a six-week outreach cadence across class chats, faculty lists and diaspora networks, and set an explicit target number before a single graphic was designed.

  2. Recruit speakers who look like the room

Cold outreach to alumni and community professionals in finance, law, medicine and tech, each briefed to give one concrete, transferable lesson rather than a résumé recital.

  3. Design the evening for conversation

Structured programming — short panel, seated rotations, open floor — so that every guest left with names, not just notes.

Deliverables

  • End-to-end event programme, run sheet and hosting script
  • Speaker and sponsor outreach, briefing packets and confirmations
  • Marketing campaign: identity, graphics, copy and multi-channel rollout
  • Photography and post-event recap assets for the association's archive

The night became the association's flagship event and the template its next executive inherited — a repeatable programme rather than a one-off success.
