Modernity promises that people can author their own political world by reason, and that this authorship is universal. Every unit on this syllabus tests that promise: how it was made, who had to be left out for it to be sayable, and whether the exclusion is a defect you could correct or the structure holding the thing up.

These are working notes, not summaries. Each reading is broken into the skeleton of its argument, the misreading that actually costs marks, the place where it is genuinely vulnerable, and how to use it when you write. Read a unit at a time; the arguments are built to be heard against each other.
